He’s easy, breezy, beautiful – he’s CoverBoy. Just in time for National Coming Out Day, CoverGirl announced makeup artist and YouTuber James Charles as their first ever male spokesmodel.
Katy Perry helped make the announcement on Instagram when she shared a picture of her with Charles. “Honored to have the pleasure to announce the very first COVERBOY, James Charles!”
According to the Times Union, Charles is a student at Bethlehem Central High School in the Capital Region. He launched his Instagram account last year and often posts selfies in adventurous and provocative makeup. He received nationwide attention from BuzzFeed, Mashable and more after he re-shot his senior portrait.

“All of our COVERGIRLs are role models and boundary-breakers, fearlessly expressing themselves, standing up for what they believe, and redefining what it means to be beautiful. James Charles is no exception,” CoverGirl said in a release. “One year ago, he boldly chose to launch his Instagram to the world, using transformative, dynamic makeup looks to showcase the many facets of his personality, serving as an inspiration to women, men, guys and girls who might have been afraid to do the same.”
The date of October 11 for National Coming Out Day was chosen because it is the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. National Coming Out Day is observed annually to celebrate coming out and to raise awareness of the LGBT community and civil rights movement. The first decades of observances were marked by private and public people coming out, often in the media, to raise awareness and let the mainstream know that everyone knows at least one person who is lesbian or gay. This makes today the perfect day to announce this great shift in societal beauty norms.
“Most people think they don’t know anyone gay or lesbian, and in fact everybody does. It is imperative that we come out and let people know who we are and disabuse them of their fears and stereotypes.” – Robert Eichberg, in 1993
