Over the past year we’ve heard you loud and clear. We know your type. You support Donald Trump, but you also hoot, and holler, and scream at the top of your lungs about “men in women’s restrooms” who you claim “put women and children at risk for sexual assault.” Nevermind the fact that even Donald Trump supports allowing trans men and women to use the restroom that matches their gender identity.
First and foremost, we need to get something straight – and I do mean straight – not gayly forward. Trans men and women are not using the restroom for the sake of sexually assaulting women and children. They are using the restroom for it’s intended purpose – and to argue otherwise is a farce propagated by right wing politicians who win when people fear each other. It’s a strategy we’ve seen employed time and time again – divide and conquer.
In fact, statistics tell us that those at highest risk of sexual assault are trans men and women – and they’re most likely to be assaulted in restrooms. So at the risk of agreeing with you, I think there is one thing we can both agree on. That sexual assault is criminal and must be prosecuted – regardless of who it’s committed against – women, children, or men – transgender or not.
That out of the way, let’s talk about the real elephant in the room – how you can continue to support a man who embodies the exact behavior that you are advocating against with these anti-trans bathroom bills. A man who is on tape saying “grab them by the pussy”. Let’s get another thing straight – the behavior he’s advocating is sexual assault!
The fact that we woke up this morning to reports of Tony Perkins, head of the American Family Association, excusing Donald Trump’s statements about sexual assault is absolutely appalling. This is someone who claims to be a man of god – and who not only advocates for anti-trans bathroom bills – but also writes them for legislators. If this guy is your messiah, you’ve got bigger issues than the morality of same sex marriage or transgender people using restrooms – you’ve got a sexual assault problem.
The fact that Tony Perkins can so easily excuse a candidate for President advocating for the sexual assault of women probably explains why so many pastors and clergy are now being charged with sexual assault of the very children they are supposed to protect. We have a rape culture in this country – and over the course of the past several decades it’s even infiltrated our churches. At least once a month there’s another pastor being charged with sexual assault. This dangerous culture has been propagated by the likes of men just like Donald Trump. The jokes and humor lead to actions that affect people’s lives in very real ways.
Throughout this entire election season, you’ve given him a pass. You and your cronies have said it’s “all in good fun” and “for entertainment”. I’ve got news for you. There’s nothing fun or entertaining about sexual assault.
The fact that we have a candidate for President advocating for the sexual assault of women is disgusting, despicable, and dare I say it – deplorable. I am outraged and disgusted – and you should be too. If you’re not, then there’s something wrong with you.
We see you, we know your type.
You now have a choice to make. You can support Donald Trump, who advocates for the sexual assault of women and who actively has a pending child rape case against him – or you can support anti-trans bathroom bills, but you can’t do both. To do so would only mean one thing – you’re a bigot. Period.
