Generations of fans awoke to sad to news today after learning the passing of Adam West, most notably known as Batman. Born William West Anderson the American actor’s career spanned seven decades. His acting career began in films in 1959.

West died peacefully in his home late Friday night after a short battle with leukemia. He was surrounded by his family and is survived by his wife Marcelle, six children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

“Our dad always saw himself as The Bright Knight and aspired to make a positive impact on his fans’ lives. He was and always will be our hero,” his family said in a statement.

Adam West was 88 years old.

West managed to hold on to his career despite being severely typecast after his role as the Caped Crusader. Often, he would be found playing himself due to the fact fans often viewed he himself as enough a character on his own. Using his iconic voice and deadpan style of comedy, West was able to maintain quite an illustrious career. His final appearance in film work was only last year, as the voice of Batman.
