Studiocanal has released the first stills from the final season of the South African historical drama Shaka iLembe, ahead of the series’ international presentation at MIPCOM in Cannes later this month. The images set the tone for a sprawling, cinematic conclusion to a show that has become a flagship title for African television.

Images and atmosphere

The newly published photos include a striking portrait of King Shaka kaSenzangakhona, portrayed by Lemogang Tsipa, alone on a windswept, ice‑rimmed peak. Other frames show a close-up of Nomzamo Mbatha as Queen Nandi in tears, a hut consumed by flames and a circle of Zulu warriors standing in tense formation.

Taken together, the stills emphasize the production’s scale and dramatic intensity. Studiocanal released them to build international interest ahead of the festival debut.

Where season 3 takes the story

Season three resumes four years after the events of the second series. Shaka’s rule has expanded across much of southern Africa, but new external pressures are forcing the kingdom to contend with shifting geopolitics.

The narrative broadens geographically and politically, incorporating the rise of the Basotho under Moshoeshoe, the influence of King Faku’s Mpondo Kingdom and the arrival of settlers at Port Natal. European incursion—represented on screen by advancing British interests—plays a growing role in the plot.

Cast additions and creative leadership

The final season brings several new faces to the ensemble and deepens existing portrayals. Key additions include Lerato Mvelase, Aidan Scott, Conrad Kemp and Wonder Ndlovu.

  • Lerato Mvelase as Queen Mpikase
  • Aidan Scott as Henry Francis Fynn, a British trader who forges a relationship with Shaka
  • Conrad Kemp as Lt. Francis Farewell
  • Wonder Ndlovu as Prince Mpande

Nomzamo Mbatha, who appears on screen as Queen Nandi, has also taken on responsibilities behind the camera as an executive producer. Angus Gibson directs the series, which is produced by Bomb Productions and airs on MultiChoice’s Mzansi Magic in Africa.

Production scale and recognition

Shaka iLembe is described as South Africa’s most expensive television drama to date. It has been a ratings success for MultiChoice and collected numerous accolades at the South African Film and Television Awards, including a record haul of wins in a single year and the prize for Best Drama Series.

Earlier in 2025 it was reported that this third season would be the show’s final chapter, a decision the creative team has framed as an opportunity to conclude the story with an ambitious, cinematic sweep.

International launch and distribution

Studiocanal is positioning the series as a priority title at MIPCOM. The move follows Canal+’s acquisition of MultiChoice last year and reflects the parent company’s strategy to broaden its catalog with high‑profile local productions.

The franchise has already been extended into Francophone Africa via CanalAfrique+ Magic, and Studiocanal says the MIPCOM presentation aims to attract further international partners and buyers.

Voices from the production

Mbatha has highlighted the series’ impact at home and abroad, noting her pride in its creative and economic contributions. Bomb Productions’ executive Desireé Markgraaf described the project as the result of more than a decade of development and said the team sought to tell the tale with the scale and dignity it requires.

Studiocanal and Canal+ executives framed the international push as part of a wider effort to bring locally rooted stories to global audiences, emphasizing authenticity and strong creative execution as drivers of the show’s cross‑border appeal.
