All three join Balfe in what producers describe as a tense, character-driven horror thriller crafted by a creative team led by Alfonso Cuarón.
Premise and themes
Ascension is adapted from Adam Nevill’s novel Last Days and unfolds as a one-hour psychological horror series. It follows Rose, played by Balfe, a tenacious documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother who excels at exposing other people’s secrets while grappling with her own.

Rose’s investigation into a 20th-century sect called the Church of Ascension offers her a surprising sense of belonging — until darker forces start to surface. The show probes questions of guilt, protection, and the moral compromises people make for those they love.
Creative team and production
Apple Studios is handling the studio duties. Esperanto Filmoj’s Gabriela Rodriguez and Richard Schwartz serve as executive producers alongside Alfonso and Carlos Cuarón. Anonymous Content’s slate of executive producers includes Steve Golin, David Levine and Zack Hayden.
The series is written by James, White, Alfonso Cuarón and Carlos Cuarón, with James named as the lead director. Anonymous Content is also listed as a producer on the project.
