Week 8 narrows College Football Playoff picture as early-season contenders are cut

Show summary Hide summary

The College Football Playoff picture tightened dramatically after Week 8, with 11 Power Four programs effectively removed from national-title contention — among them preseason pick Oregon. With the selection committee meeting in Dallas two weeks away, last weekend’s upsets reshaped conference races and at-large hopes across the country.

Where the CFP picture stands after Week 8

The aftermath of another chaotic weekend leaves the committee with fewer realistic contenders to evaluate. Using our Eliminator framework — cutting teams that no longer have a plausible path to the CFP — the landscape is clearer, if still crowded.

ACC

Alive: Clemson, Duke, Miami, SMU, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest

The conference race now really comes down to Miami and Wake Forest, with several other programs still clinging to tiebreaker scenarios that could send them to Charlotte for the ACC title game. That mathematical path keeps teams like Clemson and Duke technically alive for the CFP, even as their recent on-field form seems a long way from national-championship level.

Eliminated: North Carolina, Pitt, Virginia

Last weekend was unkind to hopefuls in the league: North Carolina fell in overtime at Syracuse, Pitt’s struggles — particularly at quarterback — have been stark of late, and Virginia hasn’t recovered since its loss to Duke.

Out: Boston College, California, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Louisville, NC State, Stanford, Syracuse

Big 12

Alive: Arizona, BYU, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Utah

The Big 12 endured a punishing weekend. Several teams lost realistic paths to Arlington and, with surprising results, the conference’s chance to send multiple teams to the CFP is suddenly less certain. Notable moments included UCF’s upset of BYU and Texas Tech’s first defeat, which likely forces the Red Raiders to win out to remain in the conversation.

Eliminated: Baylor, Houston, Kansas State

Baylor’s slide to a loss at Kansas cost its conference hopes and precipitated a coaching change. Houston, despite looking like one of the better two-loss teams nationally, fell to Utah and now faces unfavorable tiebreaker scenarios. Kansas State’s loss to Arizona State — against backup quarterbacks — proved to be the end of the line.

Out: Arizona State, Cincinnati, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas, TCU, UCF, West Virginia

Big Ten

Alive: Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, USC, UCLA, Wisconsin

The Big Ten shows deeper balance at the top than in some recent years. Teams such as Wisconsin, Minnesota and Northwestern have paths to the playoff, while undefeated UCLA and reigning champion Indiana remain central to the conference picture.

Eliminated: Michigan, Oregon

Two programs that carried high expectations — Michigan and Oregon — are now out of CFP contention after losses that erased earlier optimism. Those results raise questions about leadership and roster construction at both schools going forward.

Out: Illinois, Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, Washington

SEC

Alive: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas

The SEC suffered several damaging results for at-large aspirations, but the conference still has multiple teams in play. The next two weeks will be revealing, especially for Tennessee and Florida as they face key rivalry tests that could determine their CFP viability.

Eliminated: Auburn, Mississippi State

Auburn’s inconsistency dropped it below .500 in league play, while Mississippi State’s form has waned since losing quarterback Kamario Taylor to injury.

Out: Arkansas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt

Independents

Alive: Notre Dame

Notre Dame had a bye weekend and avoided an upset, but BYU’s road loss weakened a résumé that now hinges on a big matchup with Miami next month.

Eliminated: None

Out: UConn

American

Alive: Memphis, North Texas, UTSA

If the American is to secure the Group of Six auto-bid, UTSA’s ability to win out is the clearest route after Memphis’s recent slip. North Texas remains relevant with its explosive offense and a key upcoming road game at UTSA.

Eliminated: None

Out: Army, Charlotte, East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Navy, Rice, South Florida, Temple, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB

Conference USA

Alive: None

Out: Delaware, Florida International, Jacksonville State, Kennesaw State, Liberty, Middle Tennessee State, Missouri State, New Mexico State, Sam Houston State, Western Kentucky

MAC

Alive: None

Eliminated: Western Michigan

Western Michigan’s loss at Toledo ended the slim playoff hopes the Broncos harbored. That result also places pressure on Western Michigan to win the remainder of its schedule if it hopes to return to Detroit and defend its conference crown.

Out: Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Buffalo, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Ohio, Sacramento State, Toledo, UMass

Mountain West

Alive: New Mexico

Jason Eck’s New Mexico squad has ridden a strong defensive stretch to the top of the Mountain West, including a signature win over North Dakota State. They’ll likely need to keep winning and hope for Boise State to slip to be serious CFP contenders, but they deserve attention entering the committee’s first Top 25.

Eliminated: Air Force, North Dakota State

Close defeats knocked both programs out of legitimate CFP contention. At best they can aim for the conference title.

Out: Hawai‘i, Nevada, Northern Illinois, San José State, UNLV, UTEP, Wyoming

Pac-12

Alive: Boise State, Oregon State

Boise State steadied itself with a comfortable win at Washington State and remains the front-runner among the league’s Group of Six hopefuls. Oregon State also benefited from positive news around its program ahead of a crucial stretch of games that will shape its postseason chances.

Eliminated: None

Out: Colorado State, Fresno State, San Diego State, Texas State, Utah State, Washington State

Sun Belt

Alive: James Madison

James Madison’s road setback at Appalachian State is a reminder of the Sun Belt’s unpredictability. The Dukes’ best path toward CFP consideration would have been an unbeaten run, given where metrics currently stand versus teams like Boise State and New Mexico.

Eliminated: None

Out: Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Louisiana, Louisiana Tech, Louisiana-Monroe, Marshall, Old Dominion, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy
