Peacock has acquired a new six-part documentary series about the U.S. version of The Office that will begin streaming on September 7. Fan Level Midnight: Devoted to The Office examines how the sitcom moved from a shaky start to becoming a long-running cultural touchstone—and why fans remain so devoted.

The series travels between the show’s fictional home in Scranton, Pennsylvania, and the production stages in Van Nuys, California, to trace the program’s evolution. Across six episodes, filmmakers revisit key turning points in the show’s trajectory and explore its ongoing relationship with audiences.

Episodes examine the early fight to keep the series on network television, the shifting portrayal of Michael Scott, and the creative choices behind standout installments such as “Diversity Day,” “Office Olympics” and “Dinner Party.” The doc also addresses the fallout and implications after Steve Carell’s exit and the show’s continued resonance with new viewers.
Voices on and behind the camera
Director and editor Shawn Cauthen leads the project and will be joined on screen by new sit-down interviews with several figures from the show’s history, including former NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly, director-producer Paul Feig and cast members Andy Buckley and Leslie David Baker.

The series intersperses those fresh interviews with archival footage and past conversations featuring many members of the cast and creative team, among them Steve Carell, Rainn Wilson, Ed Helms, Jenna Fischer, Greg Daniels, John Krasinski, Angela Kinsey, Phyllis Smith and Will Ferrell.
Production credits list John Matthews and Cauthen as producers, with Tim Ogletree and Jeremy Loethen as executive producers. The filmmaker’s representatives at Courageous Artists negotiated the deal with Peacock.
Placement and follow-ups
Peacock will schedule the doc to stream ahead of Season 2 of The Paper, which premieres on September 9, positioning the series as a thematic lead-in.
Cauthen is also working on another multi-interview documentary series, Texas Forever: The Legacy of Friday Night Lights. That project—currently without a distributor attachment—will gather more than 60 interviews to explore the full legacy from H.G. Bissinger’s book and Peter Berg’s film to the television series and the communities tied to Texas high school football.
On why the project matters
Cauthen told Deadline that the show grew beyond a simple sitcom to become a source of connection for many viewers—helping form friendships, offering comfort during difficult times and still finding new audiences. He said the aim of Fan Level Midnight is to tell both the story of those who made the series and the fans who sustained it.
