Nicola Coughlan, who said in August she would step back from Bridgerton, has returned to the show in a smaller capacity. The actor told PureWow she is filming a cameo and has enjoyed reuniting with the cast.

Stepping away, then keeping the door open

Earlier this year Coughlan told E! News that leaving felt “bittersweet” after an intense run on the series. She described the show’s format—each season telling a different story—as part of its appeal, and signaled the departure was intentional rather than permanent.

Coughlan described stepping away from the series as “bittersweet.”

At the time she also made clear she would be willing to come back. “I’ll always pop back to Bridgerton if they want me,” she said, adding she would even appear briefly as “set dressing” if needed.

Now back in a cameo role

In a new interview with PureWow, Coughlan confirmed she has been filming again, though in a reduced role. “I’ve had a really amazing year. I’ve been very, very lucky,” she told the outlet. “I’m still filming on Bridgerton in more of a cameo role this time, but it’s just been a joy to come back and see everybody.”

A shifted narrative voice in the Ton

The series itself has moved forward without Penelope as its chronicler. The show introduced a new Lady Whistledown, and the character’s first dispatch acknowledged the surprise of her return: “Are you perhaps feeling a little shock? You thought I was gone for good, but far too much transpires for this author to remain silent. It is assuredly a reunion rooted in care and love. Though this time with a very different author.”

The combination of familiar faces and a new narrator allows the series to keep continuity while changing perspective. For viewers, Coughlan’s cameo offers a recognizable touch amid that shift.
