Identify which files and folders are using storage on your Windows PC

Windows includes a built-in tool that shows what’s occupying your drive and lets you reclaim space. A few quick clicks in Settings can reveal the biggest space hogs and offer safe ways to remove or move files.

Open the Storage overview

Press Win + I to open Settings, then navigate to System > Storage. At the top you’ll see how much of your main disk is used and a breakdown by category, such as apps, temporary files, and system data.

Click any category to jump directly to controls that let you manage or remove those items.

Remove or relocate large apps

Many systems lose space to installed programs. Select the Installed apps option to open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, then change Sort by to Size (Large to Small).

That puts the largest candidates first. Use the three-dot menu beside an entry to choose Uninstall. If your PC has more than one drive, some applications—Microsoft Store games, for example—may also provide a Move option so you can shift them to another disk.

Clean temporary files carefully

The Temporary Files section lists removable items, with checkboxes for things like Thumbnails that are quick wins for space savings. Click Cleanup System Files to reveal additional categories that Windows considers safe to remove.

Be cautious with entries labeled Downloads and Recycle Bin. Emptying them frees space immediately, but also permanently deletes any files inside.

Open the Recycle Bin from your desktop to scan for things you want to recover before clearing it. Likewise, review the contents of your Downloads folder to avoid deleting items you still need.

Check other drives

If your computer contains multiple storage devices, return to the main Storage screen and expand Advanced storage settings. Choose Storage used on other drives to see the same category breakdown for each additional disk.

That view helps you spot which drive might be a better target for moving large apps or which one needs cleanup attention.
