Track down files and apps consuming your Windows PC storage

Show summary Hide summary

Running out of disk space on a Windows PC is common, but the operating system includes built-in tools that make it simple to find and remove the biggest culprits. A few minutes in Settings can reveal which files and apps are using the most room and where you can safely reclaim space.

Open the Storage overview

Press Win + I to open Settings, then navigate to System > Storage. The page shows total usage on your main drive and a category-by-category breakdown of what’s taking space.

Select any category to jump directly to management options for that item. This view helps you prioritize the easiest wins before moving on to more time-consuming cleanup tasks.

Remove or move large apps

The list labeled Installed apps often contains the largest files. Clicking it opens Settings > Apps > Installed apps, where you can rearrange entries to find the biggest programs first.

Sort installed apps by size to find and remove the largest programs.

Use the Sort by control and choose Size (Large to Small) so large items appear at the top. Open the three-dot (…) menu for an entry to see options such as Uninstall. If your PC has multiple drives, some titles—particularly games installed from the Microsoft Store—may offer a Move option instead of removal.

Clean temporary files — but check important folders first

The Temporary Files section lists removable items with checkboxes, including things like Thumbnails that can free up space quickly. Selecting Cleanup System Files expands the list to include more system-level clutter.

Exercise caution with Downloads and the Recycle Bin. Both can hold large amounts of data, yet they may contain files you still need. Open the Recycle Bin from your desktop to review recoverable items before emptying it, and scan your Downloads folder for anything worth keeping.

Check other drives

If your machine contains more than one storage device, return to the main Storage page and expand Advanced storage settings. Choose Storage used on other drives to view a similar breakdown for each disk attached to your PC.

This makes it easier to target a specific drive for cleanup or to decide whether moving large apps to a secondary disk is the right move for freeing space on your system volume.
