U.S. Envoy Tackles Tricky Relationship–MANAGUA, Nicaragua – When Robert J. Callahan worked in the U.S. Embassy in Tegucigalpa in the early 1980s, he represented an aggressive U.S. administration that sought to undermine Nicaragua’s Sandinista government by arming and training counterrevolutionary insurgents based in Honduras. As the political gods would have it, 25 years later Callahan is back in the neighborhood, only this time as the U.S. Ambassador to Nicaragua where his mandate is entirely different: to work in cooperation and support of the Sandinista government.

China’s yuan trades 7:1 against the dollar

China’s currency, the yuan, has continued its strong ascent in value against the US dollar, as the central bank set the medium parity trading rate at 7:0015 against the greenback on Tuesday.  There only exists a wafer thin distance to reach the benchmark of 7:1 yuan vs dollar ratio.  The People’s Bank of China abolished a fixed rate targeting the US dollar in July 2005. Since then, the yuan’s value has been determined by the market performance of a basket of major foreign currencies, including the dollar, the euro, and the Japanese yen

Artillery training on Tinian eyed

By Mark Rabago
Assistant Editor

The U.S. Marines is looking at Tinian as a possible training ground for its artillery units once 8,000 of its troops relocate from Okinawa to Guam.

This was disclosed yesterday by Marine Corps Bases Pacific MCI MidPac Director Col. Clyde T. Burton in an e-mail to the Saipan Tribune.

Burton said he discussed the service’s plans for the region in Wednesday’s 2008 Pacific Aviation Directors Workshop held at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan, but he did not delve into details because the Marines are still at the conceptual phase of developing its training plans.

“We are beginning to work on a master plan which will lead to more details in the future. However, because of the need for coordination of aviation with indirect fires, I did note at the FAA conference that we may have mortars and artillery positions as part of our training ranges on Tinian.”
