Responding to a question from a Western media outlet at a regular press conference by Chinese Foreign Ministry on whether the anti-CNN website is supported by the Chinese government, spokesman Qin Gang said the website represented unprompted efforts by Chinese people from all walks of life to condemn and criticize Western media for their irresponsible and unethical reports and it had nothing to do with the government.

Western media led by CNN have been advocating the principles of objective and impartial reporting. However, they distorted reports on riots in Tibet that involved beating, smashing, looting and burning.

 This would be funny if it wasn’t about people’s lives.  So heavy handed press.  It reminds me of the early Soviet propaganda which was similarly heavy handed and clumsy.  Next, they will show us “interviews” on TV.

He explained to Xinhua he was drunk at home that day when he heard someone shouting “get out, or we will burn down your house.” Then he just blindly followed them.Gyaincain, 53, said he came out when he heard people shouting “all people out, or burnt by fire.” “I just followed them,” he said.

“I was very disturbed by what I did. My family has persuaded me to give in to police,” he said.

Global downturn won’t hit China badly

China’s economy will experience only a moderate slowdown in 2008 because its diversified exports and strong domestic demand will help it stay resilient amid a weakening world economy, economists said yesterday.”We expect the Chinese economy to grow by 10 percent this year despite a US-led global economic slowdown,” said Liang Hong, an economist with Goldman Sachs in Hong Kong. “Strong domestic demand, especially investment growth, is expected to sustain the overall GDP growth, though the export growth is set to slow down.”

A Thai satellite company said Wednesday it stopped airing broadcasts of a Middle East-based television channel after learning it was tied to the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, a company spokesman said.

The broadcasts of Al-Manar were halted last Friday after just three days of a test run beamed through THAICOM satellites, said Piyanuch Sujpluem, a spokeswoman for Shin Satellite Public Company.

But Ibrahim Gambari, the U.N.’s special envoy to Myanmar, failed to see either the junta leader, Senior Gen. Than Shwe, or his deputy early Sunday, and was returning late Sunday to the junta’s headquarters for a possible third meeting.
