B.C. volunteers free whale tangled in fishing gear
PORT ALBERNI, B.C. - A group of volunteers has freed a juvenile humpback whale that had become entangled in fishing gear and was nearing death in Clayoquot Sound.

John Forde, the owner of Clayoquot Eco Tours and the Whale Centre and a board member for the Strawberry Isle Research Society, spearheaded the rescue last Sunday.

The 25-year-old San Francisco resident was on one of those surfing trips this week on the Pacific coast of Mexico with his friend, Brant Helms, when, while surfing, they saw a shark in the water, acquaintances said Wednesday. The two surfers joked about keeping their toes out of the water.

One hopes against volcanic eruptions while birding. I was spared on a recent trip up Guatemala’s San Pedro volcano. It was a good thing; the birding was among the best I’ve experienced.Rising from the shores of Lake Atitlan at 5,100 feet, San Pedro tops out at 10,500 feet. Our primary target was one of the world’s rarest birds, the horned guan.
