BEIJING–Chinese state media say the government will meet with a private representative of the Dalai Lama soon.

Xinhua News Agency said today it has learned of the development “from official sources.”

An official was quoted as saying there had been requests repeatedly made by “the Dalai side for resuming talks.”

China has been under international pressure to open a dialogue with the Dalai Lama since anti-government riots in Tibet in mid-March.

Whatever you think of the problems of the Chinese occupation of Tibet the below story is a close to the official Chinese line about the conflict. The article is from China Daily which in a;; things political it sings the party line. Incidently, their (Chinese government) handling of the public relations aspects of this problem is increasingly sophisticated and effective. When they find the proper mix of fact and fancy like the Bush folks did for several years, they will have it down.

A modern administrative system featuring regional autonomy and proper public services, is thriving in Tibet, said Tibetologists who denied any possibility of the region returning to theocracy with the Dalai Lama as its head.

Theocracy has lost its root in Tibet as people have learned from the past, Professor Lhagpa Phuntshogs, China Tibetology Research Center (CTRC) general director, told Xinhua Friday.

“Tibet had been under the theocratic rule and feudal serfdom for centuries until the 1950s,” he said, adding theocracy in Tibet was not unique from the system that used to dominate Europe and was abandoned since the Renaissance in the 15th century.

The Chinese seem to be pushing the envelope as far as demonizing this peaceful man.  If they open the floodgates and let their general population migrate and idustrialize Tibet, it is all  over for the Indigenous fols of the region.

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has stepped up attacks on the Dalai Lama, blasting him for abusing religion, stirring protests in Tibet and preparing for independence as the Olympic flame arrived in Beijing on Monday under tight security.

The scorn aimed at Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader indicated Beijing was digging in its heels in the face of mounting pressure from abroad to engage in dialogue with the Nobel Peace Prize winner. That pressure follows more than two weeks of protests and suppression in Tibetan-populated areas of China.

ReutersKANGDING–hina said 19 people died in riots in the Tibetan capital last week and official media warned against the unrest spreading to the northwest region of Xinjiang, where Uighur Muslims bridle under Chinese control.

Eighteen were burnt or hacked to death in the Lhasa violence, Xinhua news agency said. It has repeatedly quoted officials as saying separatists backed by the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, engineered the protests.
