Over 23,600 Indonesian workers deported this year
RIYADH: Saudi Arabia deported 23,644 Indonesian migrant workers, mostly maids, in 2008. Most of these workers entered the Kingdom on Umrah visas and overstayed, said senior Indonesian officials.

“The total number of Indonesian workers deported this year will be a little more than the figure of 23,644 given by the Indonesian Consulate in Jeddah,” said Indonesian Embassy spokesman Arif Suyoko.

“In fact, the total number of deported workers from Saudi Arabia as a whole can be higher if we include Riyadh immigration also,” said Suyoko, who was commenting on a report compiled and released by Indonesian Consul General Abdullah Mansyur.

“We have concluded, after a long investigation, that serious human rights violations have occurred against thousands of people for the last two years in the Lapindo mudflow,” Kabul Supriadi, who headed the commission’s investigation team for the mudflow, said Wednesday during a media conference held to mark the two-year anniversary of the disaster.

Wayang Wong Bharata survives on love, devotion | The Jakarta Post

The vast archipelagic nation of Indonesia is blessed with a wealth of indigenous cultures that stretch across from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam to Papua. So diverse and various is Indonesian culture that the national slogan Bhinneka Tunggal Ika — “Unity in Diversity” — is an apt reflection of this plurality. One art form that is part of this richness is the wayang (traditional puppetry), influenced by Hinduism, and the history of which can be traced as far back as the 9th Century in Indonesia.

Makkah Imam Calls for Islamic Common Market

RIYADH, 15 March 2008 — Sheikh Saud Al-Shuraim, imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah and a member of the teaching staff at Umm Al-Qura University, has called for the establishment of an Islamic common market.Delivering his Juma sermon at the Grand Mosque yesterday, the imam said the proposed market should follow the teachings of the Shariah, keeping away from interest-based financial dealings.

Many international financial organizations have started adopting Islamic financing systems after the latter proved successful in terms of achieving substantial profits, Al-Shuraim said, adding that the Qur’an and Sunnah have explained the basic principles for financial transactions.

Ezzuddin Khoja, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Financial Banks, said Islamic banks in Arab and Muslim countries alone now handle more than $250 billion.

The Jakarta Post - Newmont may lose operating license

JAKARTA (JP): The local unit of U.S. mining giant Newmont Mining Corp. has been accused by the government of breaching its contract, a charge flatly denied by the company.

The Indonesian Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) has issued a warning to PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara to immediately sell a 10 percent stake in the mine to local administrations or face the termination of its license of operation.

“The Indonesian government has put Newmont Nusa Tenggara on default status for its failure to meet its obligation to sell a 10 percent stake to the government or to parties assigned by the government,” said the board in a recent statement.

The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has set a deadline of Feb. 22 for Newmont to sell the stake or risk having its contract terminated.

Under the terms of its 1986 contract, Newmont is required to sell a 51 percent stake to local institutions in stages through 2010, with the firm having already sold a 20 percent stake to PT Pukuafu Indah, which is owned by local businessman Jusuf Merukh.
