US testing new system to bypass web filters

The US government is testing a new technology in China that could soon give the country's 300 million web users another way to access information blocked by the Chinese government's filters.

The technology would pose yet another challenge to Beijing, which has been struggling to keep improper and violent materials, including pornography, away from its Internet users.

Thailand expands cellular service

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

Bangkok’s Independent Newspaper
AIS to launch 3g broadband this year
Advanced Info Service (AIS) is set to launch a 3G broadband cellular service on its existing 900MHz band within the next six months, its president Wichian Mektrakarn said yesterday.

Published on March 22, 2008

TOT, which owns the AIS concession, already has permission from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) for AIS to import the third-generation equipment needed for the service.

However, the service is expected to be limited to some potential areas, said Wichian, who declined to specify the exact locations or investment cost.

If launched, AIS still has to share the revenue from the 3G service with TOT, given that the service will be launched on its existing concession owned by the state agency.

YouTube access blocked in China

Monday, March 17th, 2008

The OTHER side of China rears it’s ugly head in a couple of places.

YouTube access blocked in China

Access to YouTube in China was denied on Sunday after footage of recent deadly protests in Tibet appeared on the video posting site. Attempts to call up the site met with a blank screen and an error message saying the web page could not be displayed. The access problems came after video clips began appearing on the site showing violent unrest in the Tibetan capital Lhasa that triggered a virtual lockdown of the city by security forces.Chinese riot police march through the city of Kangding, located around 400 kilometres (250 miles) west of Chengdu in Sichuan Province March 17, 2008. Chinese riot police march through the city of Kangding, located around 400 kilometres (250 miles) west of Chengdu in Sichuan Province March 17, 2008. Chinese officials declared a “people’s war” of security and propaganda against support for the Dalai Lama in Tibet after the worst unrest in the region for two decades racked the regional capital Lhasa over the past few days.Reuters

China, which strictly controls access to information, has kept a tight lid on news out of Lhasa, with foreign journalists being denied access and foreign tourists ordered out of the city. The only footage broadcast by state-run media so far has been a short clip showing Tibetan rioters in the city destroying Chinese shops, but nothing has been released on the resulting crackdown by police.

Behind the Great Firewall | Chinese Technology

Friday, February 8th, 2008

More here:  Behind the Great Firewall | Technology | The Guardian

There were two very different snowstorms that blanketed China in the run-up to this week’s Spring Festival. The first, reported by the state media, was a natural disaster heroically battled by half a million troops and Communist Youth League volunteers. It left 5.8 million people stranded, but the people ultimately prevailed. The second, reflected through the prism of internet cynics, was a calamity exacerbated by official incompetence, indolence and optimistic weather forecasts. While the old media have quoted “heartwarming words” of appreciation for the government’s response and praised its own “heroic” reporters, the internet has been abuzz with furious denunciations of state broadcasters, forecasters and officials for getting the picture wrong.
