TheStar.com | World | U.S. beef goes on sale in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea – U.S. beef returned to South Korean store shelves Tuesday under a new import agreement that has failed to stem anti-government protests, which have raged for weeks and turned central Seoul into a riot zone.

The government said it would take tough action to stop the increasingly violent rallies, which began two months ago with schoolgirls holding candlelight vigils. But the protests have lately also seen club-wielding demonstrators trying to break through barricades of police buses under showers of water cannons.

Anyone who visited SE Asia in the 60s will not be surprised by this.  Vendors on every street corner sold dog meat centered food, which if cooked properly did not taste all that bad.  It is a cultural taboo.  Like the practice of consuming monkey brains whilst they, restrained in the middle of the table are still alive.  An acquired taste I’m assured.  Coincidently, both dogs and monkeys are quite close to humans in that we share many of the same genes and hence the same DNA.

Anger as Seoul aims to reclassify dog meat - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

The Seoul city government is seeking to classify man’s best friend as livestock in order to set food safety standards for South Korean lovers of dog meat, officials say.  Somewhere between two and four million dogs are estimated to be consumed in South Korea every year but the slaughtering and processing is carried out in dirty environments and poses a risks to diners’ health, they said.

Daily Kos: In the rest of the civilized world, an economic collapse doesn’t also involve losing health benefits

just finished reading the excellent diaries by bonddad and Jerome a Paris. Please forgive my random and panicked thoughts. But I am panicked just like all of us.One huge thought is circulating through my brain. And I’m sorry to say this. We Americans are not very lucky. If we lived in any other industrialized nation, we would not need to add to all the other crises bearing down on us, how to come up with the scratch to pay for healthcare.

Many islanders interested in the Pacific region have watched in amazement at the phenomenal economic growth of the People’s Republic of China over the past 20 years or so. The MVA is looking at the country and its growing affluent population of young adults as a market for the islands’ tourist sector. That’s a good thing.I don’t normally discuss books in this column but for those interested in the Asian economy of the 21st century I recommend two interesting books, The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman and China Candid by Ye Sang. These books will provide a background on the PRC’s growing influence on the world scene and the United States economy in particular. China alone has a population of 1.2 billion people and a fast developing economy and a growing and affluent market for many consumer products.

Daily Kos: Hospital execs slam UnitedHealth: “sociopathic willingness to ignore laws”
This morning, The New York Times is reporting that New York prosecutors under the leadership of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, are investigating whether Wall Street banks withheld crucial information about the risks posed by investments linked to subprime loans.

It’s long, long overdue that state prosecutors turn their attention to the illegal and criminal activity of the health insurance industry. I think I can speak for all of us in urging Mr. Cuomo to swiftly turn his attention to the health insurance industry. Does Cuomo have the balls to do this? It remains to be seen.

What follows is testimony before a committee of the New York State Assembly of a courageous hospital CEO and his Director of Utilization Management. You’ll glimpse the all-encompassing corruption and power of the health insurance industry in the United States. You’ll be appalled and horrified to see how the political system is doing nothing to protect the American people from this predatory and merciless industry.

Chinese community grades Metro Vancouver

VANCOUVER - The Chinese community awards Metro Vancouver higher grades for environment, but poorer ones for its safety and work opportunities, compared with the general community. The differences showed up when the Chinese immigrant organization, SUCCESS, replicated an earlier “report card” done by the Vancouver Foundation.

The foundation surveyed 400 community leaders and conducted telephone polling to produce Vital Signs 2007, a report card complete with letter grades on 12 key areas of life.
