Full Story here: ‘Air Mike’ a rare bright spot in local aviation - Pacific Business News (Honolulu):
While all airlines are suffering from record-high fuel prices, Continental Micronesia has managed to stay profitable by nurturing its niche route between Hawaii and Guam.

It also has expanded its presence in Asia and the Pacific. Continental Micronesia’s routes to eight Japanese cities today make up 70 percent of its business.

“The markets have been down a little over the last six months and we are all dealing with the fuel prices,” said Walter Dias, Continental Micronesia’s vice president of sales and marketing. “But we have actually been growing our market share of the total outbound Japanese traveler.”

That growth is driven in part by increasingly cost-conscious Japanese seeking bargains closer to home. (Japanese travel to Hawaii was down 15 percent in April.)

Meantime, world-class scuba diving and snorkeling in pristine waters are drawing tourists from Asia, North America and Europe to Chuuk, Palau, Yap, Kosrae and Pohnpei. Anticipating a bustling tourist industry, Continental Micronesia’s founders helped build some of the first hotels in the region.
