Mexico prepares for US slump
Guadalajara Reporter, Front cover page story
The slowdown in the U.S. economy provoked by the north-of-the-border housing crisis will reduce growth in Mexico to less than three percent of GDP next year, one of the country’s top business executives said this week. The nation’s automotive and maquiladora sectors will be hit hardest by a slump in the United States, said Armando Paredes, president of Mexico’s Business Coordinating Council. His comments contrast those made in Guadalajara last week by President Felipe Calderon, who predicted Mexico would enjoy a growth rate of around 3.7 percent in 2008.
