The future of the local languages of the Marquesas in French Polynesia is being freshly debated by local leaders and educationalists.In te Henua ‘Enana, the Marquesas island group, indigenous languages still account for the first-used languages among the roughly 9,000 residents.
During recent election campaigns, speeches were exclusively delivered in Marquesan. Te Pû Tuhuka ‘Eo ‘Enana, the Academy of Marquesan languages has published fresh monolingual immersion language books with CDs along with a new bilingual dictionary.
